Memories
The Weather
Sitting at an outdoor table at Tony Caputo's Deli on Thursday evening. It is the middle of October in Salt Lake City, and we are in shirt sleeves. Leaving the beautiful Wyndham Hotel, our conference headquarters, on Sunday morning, the bell boy tells us it was 27 degrees when he came to work.
Roll Call of the Chapters
Of our 20 currently active PIP chapters, 16 had one or more chapter members at the conference. Only Chapters #5, #17, #23 and #25, among active chapters, had no one attend. There were 10 chapters represented at the meeting for PIP chapter leaders and representatives plus Frank Fouchi (#1769), who was there on behalf of inactive Chapter # 4 - New Orleans. Frank is hoping to reactivate the chapter with plans then to present a proposal to host POINT National Conference - 2006. At least two other chapters, perhaps three, also expressed interest in hosting in 2006.
Records
The conference set a record for registered attendees with 164. Including spouses and guests, there were over 200 at the banquet.
The registered attendees with the lowest POINT Numbers were Linda Simone York (#16), Laura DeBartolo Heidekrueger (#67) and Joan M. Brazzale (#78), who was easily identified with her POINT Number on the back of her shirt. Great idea, Joan!
The registered attendee with the highest POINT Number (and thus, our newest POINTer to attend) was Rosemarie Golden (#4733).
By our best count, there were attendees from 27 states. California had the most attendees with 56; Texas and Utah were tied for second with 17 each and Illinois had 12.
The Gifts
The thoughtful gifts of photographs, books, mementoes, and the bottle of his famous olives from Joe Geraci (#3190). Thank you all very, very much. We are very grateful.
The Photographs
Our son-in-law, Mike Rogers, came down from Seattle with our daughter, De-Anne and their two girls, for the express purpose of photographing the conference for POINTers. Mike told us right after the 2000 conference that he was disappointed there were not more photos in POINTers and that he wanted to do it. He has already told us he wants to do the same in Kansas City. We are hoping to have some of the photographs up on the POINT Website, including many that we could not find room for in this issue. We don't know when that will be, but there will be a notice in POINTers.
Thank You
A final thank you to Mike Madeo and the POINT National Conference - 2002 Organizing Committee for their hard work in producing such a spectacular event and to all those who made it a success - the speakers, the vendors and exhibitors, those who made donations of money and door prizes, and most especially, those who attended. We hope we will see you all again in Kansas City.
POINT National Conference - 2004 in Kansas City, Missouri
Tom Militello (#1):
Las Vegas, Nevada, 1998
When we arrived in Las Vegas in October, 1998, for the First POINT National Conference, no one knew if there would be a second conference. Chuck Panico (#1848), at that time the leader of PIP Chapter #11 - Southern Nevada, had produced the conference all by himself, and it was obvious that the burden of organizing such an undertaking could not ever again be done by one person. At the opening session on Monday morning, and again at the banquet that evening, I asked for some PIP chapter to come forward to volunteer to host the next one. The next morning, Lin Brinkman (#1388), the leader of PIP Chapter #10 - Texas, saw me and beckoned me to her with a crooked finger. She said that the members of her chapter who were at the conference had met the night before and had decided to host POINT National Conference - 2000.
Austin, Texas, 2000
Mike Madeo (#2263) had organized PIP Chapter #24 - Salt Lake City for the express purpose of hosting POINT National Conference - 2002, and came to Austin with an organizing committee and a plan for the conference basically in place. The work of that committee and the results of that plan eventuated in the success of the conference two years later.
Salt Lake City, Utah, 2002
We came to Salt Lake City much as we had to Las Vegas, with no chapter yet having stepped forward to host a 2004 conference. The difference was that we now had a track record of holding three conferences and there was some urgency that we not leave Salt Lake without a commitment to have a conference in 2004. At the opening session Friday morning, I again asked for a chapter to volunteer. After the banquet Friday evening, there was a meeting of 11 chapter leaders and representatives who discussed various proposals and possibilities, but after two hours, we did not have a host chapter.
Saturday morning, Mike Madeo called me out of a lecture and beckoned me to him with a crooked finger, exactly as Lin had done four years earlier. He asked me how I felt about having POINT National Conference - 2004 in Kansas City. It seems that after the meeting the previous evening, Danny Zangara (#1612), the leader of Chapter #14 - Kansas City, had gone back to his room and called some of his chapter members. On the spot, they set up a conference call among themselves and then gave Danny the go-ahead to volunteer the chapter to act as host for 2004.
Kansas City, Missouri, 2004
When I made the announcement at the closing ceremonies in Salt Lake City that Chapter #14 would be the host in 2004 and that the 2004 conference would be in Kansas City, the room erupted in cheers and all gave Danny a standing ovation. Mike Madeo then took the microphone and sang the line, "We're going to Kaannn-sas City, Kansas City, here we come."
During the door prize drawings, the room was abuzz over the idea of everyone meeting again in two years in Missouri.
